From the DFP I recalled the same problem. It has a 'dual stage' transmission, i.e. wheel, big cogwheel, to small cogwheel, to big cogwheel to motor small cogwheel.

Every gear/gear 'contact' has some play, and the second gearing is amplified; if the gear ratio is 8:1 and the second stage has 0.5 degrees of free play, you'll feel 8*0.5 = 4 degrees of play at the steering wheel.

A G25 has a single transmission where this problem is probably some 8x less bad..

Most of the conspiracy videos are 'well done' in a way that you're easily thinking "hmm they could be right". Then you reach a point where you decide where you sit on the evolution ladder: one either goes shouting that everything including the sun is a government scam, or one scratches the chin and investigates things with reason... Easier is to watch the Mythbusters episode and they recreate the most commonly heard scenes and events that the conspiracy people put forward.

The result is the ever common human nature, we rather shout than go scientific about things.. The reflections etc, all perfectly reasonable..

The Mythbusters episode on the moon landing was great. Proof, if proof was needed, that some common sense wins from the braindead almost religious 'conspiracists' (spelling!) out there.

It was quite a technological achievement considering they had to do things so accurately with not even a 80086 processor in there to do the math!

First there was LFS, it was nice, people raced online and most of the time they all behaved nicely.

Then everybody and their goat got internet access and LFS. The level of racing didn't go up, neither did the average posters IQ on the forum.

However, I never even remotely imagined that people would 'cruise' online and worse, debate and argue about a cruise server on the forums. Sometimes think I'm loosing touch with todays world, though I hope it is todays world loosing touch with itself!

The reason I didn't renew my iracing subscription was that it seems like they're just tweaking and 'modding' almost, which was exactly what I hoped they wouldn't do.

Instead its more of the usual, the marketing claims the realism, the physics, while probably being improved.. are probably full of errors.

If they're modding, I rather work on my own mods.. Sometimes I think I'm doing a better job at some things, despite being on my own and with an old physics engine, than the millions of Henry manage a full team at iRacing..

I am probably wrong here but the fact that this even crosses my mind is worrying.

I do miss the forums, but 20 a month for forum posting isn't really the idea

A short update, I hope to get some of you the Toyota Supra so you get in on a nice beta, plus its somewhat sluggish and heavy, yet powerfull enough to go sideways in. Less darty and twitchy than a Z06..

Its hard to say, as Bose spends far more on marketing than research. A Z5500 will surely sound better than the Bose system though it may take a bit of tuning (usually means turn down the sub..) But that is speaking about true quality which you certainly don't have with the Bose so its hard to say what you actually like!

You might get a better experience from trying an actual corvette c6 (z51 / z06) in rFactor using this:

http://www.rfactorcentral.com/ ... Chevrolet%20Corvette%20C6

with physics update:

http://geocities.com/n_heusink ... rphysics/physicsfiles.htm

In LFS without tweaking you'd still be better off with the GT turbo than the Fz50 coz the rear weight bias of the Fz5 is a.. bit.. different from a Vette.. :S

He needs RAM so he can come back and say that more RAM didn't help at all (which it won't..) so he can ask for a better 3d card or processor..

There, I sneaked some sense into this quite pointless thread

You can do those things in Holland as well and its also pretty lame from what I've heard.

I'd say for simracers it would be much better if we could just drive one car, I dunno an Elise, S2000.. and spend actual time in that. Sure its not a 355 but at least you can learn and experience something by doing a few hours worth of gradually increasing speed in these cars.

Are you sure that is a flat normal asphalt skidpad? If by 'nomal' you mean the tires that come with the car, it basically can't pull 1.15.. Reviews rarely see that type of car reach 0.9.. Sure with semi slicks you migt get close..

Perhaps if you tripple stiffen the rear rollbar you could get a bit closer, otherwise I think something is off.. Peak G doesn't count of course, sustained G ... well almost no road car on normal tires reaches 1.15!

Edit: a Z06 corvette for example skidpads between 1 and 1.04 G, but on track you can get 1.25 if there is a bit of banking involved..

Fun audio thread. I'd challenge people to a proper blind test between mp3 at various bit rates and an original recording.. The EQ debate is quite entertaining as well. Proper high quality LAME 128kbit, most people struggle, barey anyone gets statistically valid scores picking it out...

Of course one shouldn't need an EQ for various types of music; if they actually went for a certain sound, they'd have put that on the CD, not requiring on someone to use silly EQ settings at home. EQs can be handy for making horrible records sound a bit better by toning down excessive bass and ear piercing cymbals.

A decent recording played back on a decent system should in principle not require any EQ. However, there is a major flaw in the entire system; when playing music in a room, when you move your head about a matter of centimeters, the frequency response can go up and down considerably..

Still, thats beyond our control.. well, at one listening position you could indeed use parametric EQ to flatten the frequency response at that position in the room..

Quote from MadCat360 :Not all the cars in racing sims are racing cars.

Lots of racing cars are 400+ degrees, many even closer to 540. Of course you could use 270 but that would also mean using half the car setup steering lock.

Agreed, after 30 minutes with the DFP I almost literally thew it out. Seems the new DFGT is a tad better, at least less restrictive when you turn it fast.

In a way the G25 is too slow, but I'm not sure if it would get any easier if it delivered true steering forces as well; that would be hard work.. I used to blame the G25s for being slow, which it is.. But at 5x or more power, I'm not sure what would happen either!

hehe Not necessarily, I believe the amount of graphical steering wheel movement is the same regardless of your car setup steering lock; the ratio could still be anything from very wrong to perfect!
Niels Heusinkveld

thats why I attached a table with some hints to decent settings, of course single seaters don't use 900. Still, if you use like 20 degrees in the car setup with 270 degs on your wheel, its likely to be 2x too sensitive.
The need for an accurate steering ratio; realism is at stake! :)

Heya,

What a dramatic thread title!

A short point I want to make where us simracers can cheat a bit; the steering ratio. Assuming we have the right Fanatec or Logitech wheels, we can use anything up to 900 degrees on our steering wheels. Depending on the car we drive in the sim, we can set the steering lock somewhere between 15 and 35 degrees, depending if its a F1 car or road car for example.

The ratio between the rotation you use on the wheel and the value you set in the car setup is quite critial. A Corvette Z06 ''supercar'' has a steering ratio of 17.2:1. This means you have to turn the steeringwheel 17.2 degrees for the front tires to turn one degree. I also know a modern single seater car with a 14.5:1 ratio. Perhaps forum users know a few more real life values. In order to get somewhat correct steering sensitivity, it makes sense to copy these values in your simracing hobby. Here is how.

17.2:1 real life steering ratio: Divide your wheel setting, say 900 by this, so 900 / 17.2 = 52.3 degrees. This is the *total* steering, so you have to take half of this: 52.3/2 ~ 26 degrees. This is you car setup value.

For a single seater, its unlikely that they have 900 degrees of steering. Perhaps you know that the car has a 14.5:1 ratio and that the maximum steering is 17 degrees one way, making 34 degrees total. Then you have to set the wheel limits to 34*14.5 = 493 degrees, and set the car setup to 17.

That makes sense. The reason I'm posting is that plenty of people aren't comfortable with 900 degrees. Yet they do want 34 degrees of lock in the car setup. Say you use 450 degrees on your wheel and 34 in the car setup, this is a whopping 6.6:1 steering ratio! That is almost 3x more sensitive than an already sensitive Corvette.. Your drive will be very sensitve, twitchy and unrealistic as a result.

Its much much better to learn how to use 900 degrees on cars that do actually have this much in real life; learn how to re-grip the wheel. Its tricky but driving with a rack that is over 2x too sensitive throws any ''Its a simulation!'' arguments out of the window!

See attached table for some guidelines.

That makes you a good candidate then.. Well, if you've never used 900 you might not be comfortable using 2.5 turns; it takes a while to get used to re-gripping the wheel and still knowing when the wheels point forward.

Goldenport is a nice shortish track. I also like the GTL conversions. Essential is also to get rid of the insane.. or insine.. sine wave bumps on most tracks, that often ruins the handling.

The Nordschleife is a very difficult track to drive on, some of the cambers and humps are a bit sudden, upsetting the car a bit much. The GTR Evo conversion is a bit better but certainly has its moments of inaccuracy. More often than not its wrong tracks (sine bumps + incorrect cambers etc) that make a car harder to drive than it should.

Of course running a 100% smooth version of a track like Suzuka (GP4 conversion + sine wave changes) is different to a track like the Ring, but it is obvious that not all tracks are well made; often being conversions of what never was very good for F1 challenge in the first place..

GTL tracks at least try some bumps in the polygons, not in sine waves (after you turn the sine waves mostly off..) which can be a better challenge. There is SO MUCH available for rFactor but actually so little thats any good. :S

900 or 540, it depends what you use in the car setup. 540 would be some 1,66 times too sensitive if you use a 'realish' 28 .. 30 degrees in the car setup. For most (road) cars, 900 is not even enough, though its close.

I don't expect people will suddenly drive the cars in full control, but perhaps the telemetry will show where it goes wrong. First I want to figure out WHY a certain portion of simracers can't drive rFactor, more notably, my cars in rfactor. Then we can see if there is anything we can do about it.

Its worth a shot anyway!

Quote from DarkTimes :BBC are starting to report he has died, but they are understandably cautious.

I don't have any opinions on Jacksons personal life, it was what it was, but can I just say this.

You know he's playbacking there, as he probably did more often? Technically he can sing like that now..

Of course he was on the cover of one of the best selling albums and yes he had moves, but since the 90s he seems to have been fading away pretty fast, and I'm not talking about skin colour.

I can't grasp the Elvis type involvement, nor do I understand the concept of 'popularity'.. So I'm probably not the one to post in a thread about Michael Jackson..

One has to think, how well would tickets to "The Jackson four" sell? Janet has to pull off far more, literally, than the nipslip national drame of yesteryear..

Thanks sofar guys!

I'll ask for everyone to install motec and log files, we may drive on a race track or on a skidpad.

Time is the problem currently, lets do 'something' in a week or two. I'll pm / msn those interested.
